Who We Are

Magdalena (Singapore) comprises a group of local arts practitioners that aims to promote learning and networking amongst women in the creative arts. Its formation has been inspired by the international network, the Magdalena Project. In April 2005, Magdalena (Singapore) became a fully-fledged society registered under the Registry of Societies, Singapore (ROS Reference No.: 2024/2005).

Our Mission

Magdalena (Singapore) aims to:

 Encourage and promote the work of women in the creative arts, particularly in the performing arts;

 Provide opportunities for women to practise their craft, showcase their own work and experiment with different forms/disciplines;

 Enable women to come together to share and learn from one another;

 Encourage dialogue between artists and the community through community and educational outreach programmes;

 Facilitate the networking of women artists, not only within Singapore, but also with women artists in Southeast Asia and the rest of the world.

Current Committee Members

As of February 2008, the 20082010 committee members are as follows:

 President: Verena Tay

 Vice-President: Audrey Wong

 Secretary: Laura Schuster

 Treasurer: Tan Suet Lee

Our History

A group of Singaporean arts practitioners spearheaded and participated in Performing Words 2003: Singapore (a 2-week long, full-time workshop—organised in connection with the Magdalena Project for—women artists to create and perform their own writing, held during March 2003 at The Substation). Geddy Aniksdal (Norway) and Gilly Adams (Wales) conducted PW2003: Singapore workshop. The group then attended an international festival of women in contemporary theatre in Brisbane (April 2003), organised by Magdalena Australia.

In May 2003, this group of Singaporean arts practitioners gathered together informally as Magdalena Singapore to promote networking among women artists. In April 2005, we became Magdalena (Singapore), a fully-fledged society registered under the Registry of Societies. The Magdalena Project

The Magdalena Project is an international network of women in contemporary theatre linking women artists across five continents. It was founded by Jill Greenhalgh in 1986 and originally based in Wales. The Project is committed to:

 Increasing the awareness of women’s contribution to contemporary theatre;

 Enabling women performers to explore new approaches to theatre-making that profoundly reflect their own personal experience;

 Providing opportunities for women to work together and share/develop their work.

What the Magdalena Project Does

Since its foundation, the Magdalena Project continues to:

 Produce performances, workshops, conferences and collaborations;

 Host international festivals;

 Archive material relating to women and performance;

 Act as a consultant to women’s theatre events around the world;

 Publish newsletters, videos and books, including The Open Page, an annual journal of thoughts, questions and visions from women in theatre.
