Magdalena (Singapore)
comprises a group of local arts practitioners that aims to promote
learning and networking amongst women in the creative arts. Its
formation has been inspired by the international network,
the
Magdalena Project. In April 2005, Magdalena (Singapore)
became a fully-fledged society registered under the Registry of
Societies, Singapore (ROS Reference No.: 2024/2005).
Magdalena (Singapore)
aims to:
● Encourage
and promote the work of women in the creative arts, particularly in the
performing arts;
● Provide
opportunities for women to practise their craft, showcase their own work
and experiment with different forms/disciplines;
● Enable
women to come together to share and learn from one another;
● Encourage
dialogue between artists and the community through community and
educational outreach programmes;
● Facilitate
the networking of women artists, not only within Singapore, but also
with women artists in Southeast Asia and the rest of the world.

Our
History
A group of Singaporean
arts practitioners spearheaded and participated in Performing Words
2003: Singapore (a 2-week long, full-time workshop—organised in
connection with the Magdalena Project for—women artists to create and
perform their own writing, held during March 2003 at The Substation).
Geddy Aniksdal (Norway) and Gilly Adams (Wales) conducted PW2003:
Singapore workshop. The group then attended an international
festival of women in contemporary theatre in Brisbane (April 2003),
organised by Magdalena Australia.
In May 2003, this group
of Singaporean arts practitioners gathered together informally as
Magdalena Singapore to promote networking among women artists. In April
2005, we became Magdalena (Singapore), a fully-fledged society
registered under the Registry of Societies.

The
Magdalena Project
The Magdalena Project is an
international network of women in contemporary theatre linking women
artists across five continents. It was founded by Jill Greenhalgh in
1986 and originally based in Wales. The Project is committed to:
● Increasing
the awareness of women’s contribution to contemporary theatre;
● Enabling
women performers to explore new approaches to theatre-making that
profoundly reflect their own personal experience;
● Providing
opportunities for women to work together and share/develop their work.
What the
Magdalena Project Does
Since its foundation,
the Magdalena Project continues to:
● Produce
performances, workshops, conferences and collaborations;
● Host
international festivals;
● Archive
material relating to women and performance;
● Act
as a consultant to women’s theatre events around the world;
● Publish
newsletters, videos and books, including
The Open Page, an annual journal of
thoughts, questions and visions from women in theatre. |
